What is a Data Evangelist: training, salaries
The data evangelist, while not a religious figure, has the sacred mission of spreading data culture throughout the company. His aim is to promote the understanding and judicious use of data among staff and departments. He makes data attractive by explaining its use and demonstrating its benefits. In Paris, the average gross salary for a Data Evangelist is €60,000 per year.
The missions of a Data Evangelist
A Data Evangelist (sometimes referred to as a Technical Evangelist) is a person in charge of promoting data culture within a company. It may seem a vague concept, but his or her role is simply to educate, raise awareness and convince other members of the company of the importance and benefits of using data. This can be achieved in a variety of ways: with educational content, presentations or workshops, for example. By collaborating with different teams, the Data Evangelist promotes better use of data. In this way, they contribute to decision-making and the optimization of company processes. Their missions can be summed up in 3 points:
1. convince the various people in the company of the power of data ;
2 Explain how to use this data power;
3. help data team members create guides and tutorials to explain how to use data, software and perform analyses.
The Data Evangelist's key skills
● Excellent communication skills;
● Excellent creativity to spread this culture in a pleasant way ;
● A good understanding of the world of data.
Both a data and communication expert, the Data Evangelist must be able to address all members of the company, whether or not they have any knowledge of data science. He or she must be a good popularizer, without neglecting data security aspects. Finally, the ability to build strong relationships and gain the trust of members of the organization is essential to influence the adoption of a data-driven culture and better decision-making within the company.
The salary of a Data Evangelist
As the Data Evangelist profession is sometimes worded differently, it's complicated to gather precise salary data. However, we can estimate that a good Data Evangelist in Paris with a few years' experience could earn a gross salary of €85,000 per year in 2023.
Training
The basis of a Data Evangelist's training must be computer science and statistics. This foundation can then be supplemented by courses in management, artificial intelligence and data science. There are masters' degrees specializing in data analysis, as well as courses at Big Data or Data science business schools such as EDHEC. Courses in communication, storytelling and pedagogy can also reinforce the skills needed to effectively convey data concepts.
If continuing education isn't for you, consider a work-study program. For example, there's the Albert School's DataScientest course, in partnership with Mines de Paris. You'll be paid and alternate between periods in the company and periods at school. In France, the average gross salary for a Data Evangelist on a sandwich course is around €1,300 per month.
