Blockchain Engineer: jobs, salary and training

Blockchain Engineers play a crucial role in today's digital evolution. These experts in computer networks, cryptography and Blockchain algorithms are redefining software development. The median gross annual salary for a Blockchain Engineer is €52,000 for a beginner, rising to €90,000 for an experienced engineer. This salary is higher than the industry average and is justified by the rarity and complexity of their skills.

What is blockchain?

Before talking about blockchain engineers, it's important to define what blockchain is.

Blockchain is a technology used to store and transmit information in a decentralized, secure manner. Blockchain can be seen as a digital ledger shared between several computers. These computers work together to approve and record information or transactions. Each piece of information, called a block, is secured and linked to the previous one, creating a chain of blocks of information, hence the name "blockchain". This technology was initially designed to secure the transactions of crypto-currencies, including the famous Bitcoin. Today, its use has spread to other fields where the traceability and security of information is crucial, such as healthcare.

The business

The blockchain engineer is responsible for designing and developing applications based on blockchain technology. This involves using advanced development frameworks such as Java, Python or Ruby on Rail. They must guarantee total data security (backend) while offering users a responsive, fluid interface. Securing transactions involves the use of encryption technologies and the implementation of various cybersecurity protocols.

Another of their missions is to optimize algorithmic performance by analyzing data (big data) and using machine learning to automate and improve blockchain processes. Often entrusted with heavy responsibilities, they manage projects and oversee their development, ensuring that objectives are met on schedule.

Its key competencies

● Technical mastery of programming languages such as Python, Java and JavaScript. Solid expertise in cryptography.

● Knowledge of databases and proven web development skills.

● Versatility between the roles of developer, designer and cybersecurity expert. Essential contribution to the creation, maintenance and continuous improvement of Blockchain projects.

● In-depth understanding of the latest technological trends and innovations.

● Ongoing training attesting to its dedication to the rapid evolution of Blockchain technology.

The salary

Blockchain is at the heart of many innovations, including cryptocurrencies, smart contracts and decentralized applications. These technological advances have created an urgent need for skilled professionals capable of developing and maintaining complex blockchain systems. According to the latest market studies, the average salary of a Blockchain Engineer varies considerably depending on several factors, such as:

● Experience: as in most technology sectors, experience plays a major role in determining salaries. Experienced blockchain engineers, especially those who have worked on large-scale or innovative projects, can expect higher salaries.

● Specialization: Mastery of certain blockchain platforms (such as Ethereum, Hyperledger or Solana), or certain frameworks (such as Ruby on Rails, Django or Symfony) can also influence remuneration. Engineers with specific or rare skills are often more sought-after.

● Location: Regional differences have a significant impact on salaries. Areas with a developed technological ecosystem or a high cost of living generally offer higher salaries. An engineer in France does not necessarily earn the same salary as an engineer in Canada or the United States. Similarly, an engineer in Paris is likely to receive a higher salary than one in Lille, Rennes or Marseille, for example.

As this position is new and the data is too sparse to be meaningful, we have based ourselves on the remuneration of a Network Engineer. It is possible that the salary of a Blockchain Engineer could be higher. Here's an estimate based on experience levels:

table, th, td { border:1px solid black; padding: 8px;}
Beginner 2-5 years old Expert (+5 years)
40 000 - 45 000 45 000 - 60 000 60 000 - 90 000

It's important to stress that these figures are indicative, and that blockchain engineers working on freelance, fixed-term, permanent contracts or for startups in the early stages may have different remuneration structures, sometimes including shares in the company or performance-based bonuses.

Blockchain engineer

Like many jobs, you can work as a Blockchain engineer on a sandwich course. A work-study program is the most effective way to put your knowledge and technical skills to good use within a company, while benefiting from courses dedicated to your technical progress.

Here are some companies offering work-study contracts and the salary of a work-study blockchain engineer.

table, th, td { border:1px solid black; padding: 8px;}
Company Sector Remarks Average annual salaries
Capgemini Consulting and technology Work on numerous blockchain projects 12 000€ - 18 000€
Société Générale Banking/Finance Explore the use of blockchain in financial services 15 000€ - 20 000€
Atos Consulting/Technology Offers blockchain solutions in various fields. 12 000 € - 18 000 €
Thales Aerospace/Defense Develops cybersecurity solutions and explores blockchain. 14 000 € - 20 000 €
Orange Telecommunications Invests in blockchain startups. 12 000 € - 18 000 €

Continuing education

If work-study isn't for you, you should know that there are also continuing education courses available. There are, for example, masters degrees in computer science with specializations in blockchain, or dedicated courses at certain engineering schools. If enrolling in a training course doesn't appeal to you, there are also intensive blockchain bootcamps. To help you make your choice, we encourage you to attend meetups, conferences or read up on the subject. It's a fast-moving subject, and you need to be constantly aware of the latest developments.

An inspiring blockchain engineer

Olivier Delfosse is a Blockchain Engineer for a company called Request, which enables low-cost payments to be made using the Blockchain. After working for over 4 years in the data industry, he moved on to become a Blockchain Developer, and more recently a Blockchain Engineer.
